Obtaining[]

Talk to Waldos FieldChester Potcobble at [-64,-55].

Dialog
Ask for the latest news on the missing fishermen.

Is this all the village has come up with to help us? Pffft... I suppose we'll make do.

Keep listening.
We still haven't heard from the fishermen who went down to the bottom of the lake. As a security measure, we had to restrict access to the passage they took, but since you have a thermolactic suit, the lack of air and the unbearable cold will probably be the least of your worries, especially considering the trouble you'll run into down there.

Right, listen here. What I am about to say stays between us. You mustn't spread it around, or the fishermen are going to go nuts with worry. If they catch wind of what's going on, they might quit, and we'll be faced with the worst food shortage in history. We already had a hard time supporting the village in warm weather, so we definitely do not need that extra worry. If you appreciate the seriousness of the situation, nod your head.

Nod your head.

Good. When the fisherman drilled through the ice, they discovered an underground cavern. A cursed beast, which appeared at the same time as the big freeze and disappeared long before contact with the continent was re-established, was trapped inside. The guy handling the drill said that the howls that came from the cavern made it sound as though the beast had got the other three. So I guess you'll probably have to kill this creature before you can feel safe down there.

Ask for backup.

I'm sorry but we don't have anyone available to help you! All the same, going down alone would almost certainly be suicide. I would advise you to find three other people to chum you down, the elevator platform won't support anymore than that. Oh, and don't forget that they all need thermolactic suits of their own.

Say you're ready to go down.

There's just one more thing. When you're down there, if you find yourself face to face with a seemingly unbeatable foe, don't forget to use the suit's full powers. They probably won't be quite as effective as the spells your divinity granted you, but they might save your life.

Go down.

Step 1: Light on Shadow[]

You really should find some companions for your trip into the depths of the Frozen Lake
The Icy Crackler will start out invulnerable. For this fight you will get a special spell called 'Crack', a 4 AP melee spell to make the crackler vulnerable for 1 turn (with 3 turns cooldown). There are 4 starting spots, all quite far apart. Bringing more chars is advised, as you won't waste turns when you can't vuln the Crackler due to the cooldown.
The fight itself is not difficult. Apart from an MP buff and a release spell pushing all linear characters by 5 tiles, the Crackler has a spell similar to Bat's Eye (once per turn, with -range lasting for 1 turn) and an MP poison dealing 30 damage per MP used.
Dialog
Ask what the fishermen were doing so far below the surface.

Listen, I'm grateful for your help and all, but the fishermen were following the mayor's orders, and it's absolutely none of your business what they were looking for in the old village of Frigost.

Dialog
Ask what's hidden underneath the old submerged village.

So you're the one who was nosing around the depths of the Frozen Lake! I wish it had been one of our engineers instead, because that way we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

Press the issue.

Okay. Up here, we're short of almost everything. When contact with the continent was re-established in 640, the situation improved, but it's still far from ideal. The stocks that were frozen in the ice at the top of the lake were exhausted long ago, so I asked some dependable gents to go deeper to find some more food.

Ask her what the world was like last week, since she obviously thinks you were born yesterday.

Oh, ahem... I see. You're not as stupid as you look, then. Alright. My team did explore deep under the layer of ice, but it wasn't to find frozen foodstuffs. They were running scientific experiments on the remains of an extinct volcano. there's nothing shocking about it. The operation was included in the vast research programme established after the big freeze to help us survive the best we can. The technical data, on the other hand, is strictly confidential. Besides, it really doesn't have anything to do with you. You don't need to know anything else.

Narrow your eyes, but settle for this information for the moment.
